Cape Cod Community College Launches 90+ “HyFlex” Classes for Fall Semester

July 5, 2022

Cape Cod Community College has been a leader in Massachusetts and beyond transforming teaching and learning with flexible classes through the COVID-19 pandemic. This Fall, the College is taking the next step in evolving how students can access college courses with the mass expansion of “HyFlex” options.

HyFlex, or Hybrid Flexible, courses leverage unique, in-class technology that allows students to choose on a day-to-day basis whether they will attend a particular class on campus or virtually. The College piloted a variety of HyFlex courses last year, but thanks to new technology and adoption by many faculty members, the number of HyFlex classes has grown to more than 90 being offered in Fall 2022.

“Listening to our students, and looking at the changing landscape of higher education, it’s clear that the different options we offer for college classes need to continue to grow and transform,” said John Cox, President of Cape Cod Community College. “Our expansion of HyFlex, and the energy our faculty bring to these courses, helps our students with balancing life’s demands alongside their education. HyFlex classes give our students the power to choose what works for them and, thanks to the technology, they get a similar educational experience either way.”

At Cape Cod Community College, faculty use the award-winning “DTEN D7” technology to stream their in-person classes live to those attending via Zoom. The all-in-one, plug-and-play video conferencing software combines with Zoom and smart board features to give students attending in-person or online the exact same experience, in real-time. For the Fall semester, HyFlex classes are being offered across multiple subjects ranging from English, History, and Math to Communication, Accounting, Criminal Justice, Funeral Service, and more.

“The HyFlex program has been beneficial because I had two small children still at home, and I didn’t have to worry about getting them on-or-off the bus or about missing school if they were home sick,” said Julie Sudol ’22, a recent graduate from the College’s Funeral Service program. “It afforded me the ability to excel in my classes, whether they were at home or in the classroom.”

At the conclusion of the pilot program during the 2021-22 academic year, more than 90% of students taking HyFlex classes reported that they were interested in taking more courses in the format. That interest, in tandem with the investment in more DTEN technology and more faculty members educated to use this technology in their courses, led to the expansion for 2022-23.

“Almost a quarter of our classes available this Fall are in a HyFlex format, so we are quite literally changing the way we meet our students where they are,” said Dr. Kathleen Vranos, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Cape Cod Community College. “Looking at the data, HyFlex course completion rates have been comparable to face-to-face classes, so we knew it was time to scale up. More than 50 faculty members enrolled in a June Institute to adopt their courses for HyFlex delivery, and there’s certainly more to come. This really is a game-changer for our College and our students.”
