Cape Cod Community College Hosting Community Events for Suicide Prevention Month

September 7, 2022

With mental health and wellness top of mind for college students, Cape Cod Community College will host two community events on their West Barnstable campus in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month. On Thursday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m., the College’s Student Wellness team will host a ribbon hanging ceremony on campus, honoring those that struggle with suicidal thoughts, mental health concerns, and substance misuse. The Wellness team will then lead a Cape-wide summit on September 16 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for suicide prevention.

The September 16th event, “Creating Hope Through Action,” will feature presentations from leading organizations in our community that will share global best practices, insight, and skills on suicide prevention. The event is free and designed for any member of the community to attend, especially those individuals that work in suicide prevention and mental health.

“We welcome anyone and everyone in our communities that has been affected by suicide or mental health trauma, or wants to learn more, to join us on campus for this summit,” said Christine McCarey, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Wellness for Cape Cod Community College. “We’re extremely fortunate to have many different experts and prominent voices in this field joining us. It is absolutely a can’t-miss opportunity.”

Speakers at the summit will include Dr. Maura Weir, Director of Wellness and Counseling for Cape Cod Community College, Dr. Jeanie Tietjen, Founder and Director for the Institute of Truama, Dr. Kim Mead-Walters and Kathleen Shine O’Brien from “Sharing Kindness,” Craig Miller, author of “This is How it Feels: A Memoir of Attempting a Suicide and Finding Life,” Joanna Bridget, Director of Safety, Hope, and Healing and co-Director of the Working With Grief Division of the Support After Death by Overdose Program, and Sara Gaer, Master’s Level Clinician.

The “Creating Hope Through Action” summit is sponsored by the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Cape Cod Neighborhood Support Coalition, and Cape Cod Community College. The event is free but does require pre-registration in advance to attend. To RSVP and reserve a seat, please register here.
