90.7 WKKL at Cape Cod Community College Nominated for Multiple National Radio Awards Including “Best College Radio Station”

January 19, 2022

90.7 WKKL, Cape Cod Community College’s student radio station, has been nominated for six awards by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS). The “Cape’s Classic Alternative” has been nominated for Best College/University Radio Station (under 10,000 students), Best Sports Pre/Post Gamer Coverage for “Live After Lunch” with 4Cs student CJ Nicholas, Best Radio Documentary for “The Story of Travis Barker” with 4Cs student Robert Marriott, Best Specialty Show (Non-Music) for “Troubled Television Radio Show” with 4Cs student Matthew Salyh, Best On-Air Pledge Drive for the WKKL Alumni Groundhog Day Broadcast, and Best Community Volunteer on a College Radio Station for Kristen Eck, host of Bumblebee Lunch.

“This is a huge moment in the history of WKKL and such a great spotlight for our students,” said Lisa Zinsius, WKKL’s Operations Director and Professor. “Since coming back on the air last February the whole College has rallied behind the radio station and the students, alumni, and volunteers that are driving us forward. It is thrilling to see their hard work recognized by the IBS.”

The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System represents more than 1,000 non-profit, education-affiliated radio stations and webcasters from across the United States. Nominees for this year’s awards come from colleges and universities from across the country.

“This is strong validation for all the people who have worked so hard to position WKKL for the future, and to have it thrive as both an entertainment outlet and a learning lab for students,” said John Cox, President of Cape Cod Community College. “What our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and volunteers have done to return WKKL to its roots, and to make an immediate impact on our community, is nothing short of amazing. We can’t wait to see what they do next.”

WKKL returned to the air in February 2021 after technical issues took the historic local radio station down for several months. It returned with a stronger signal, new online streaming and podcasting presence, a renewed commitment as an academic learning space, and dedication to playing Classic Alternative music. Since then, a new generation of students have taken to the air, with support from many alumni from across the region and beyond who have provided guidance and mentoring.

The station itself has also undergone a facelift, with construction in the Makkay Broadcasting Center on the 4Cs campus bringing new studio and podcasting space to life.

Winners for the IBS Media Awards will be announced in March. WKKL broadcasts 24/7 on 90.7 FM serving Cape Cod and online all the time at capecod.edu/wkkl.
