Higgins Art Gallery at 4Cs Welcomes Joe Diggs as Artist in Residence

February 23, 2021

On Thursday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m., the Higgins Art Gallery at Cape Cod Community College will host a live Zoom event showcasing the artistic talents of their new Artist in Residence, Joe Diggs.

Diggs’ paintings are drawn from observation, but allow freedom for spontaneity, which spawns new work. By allowing for impromptu actions, Diggs is able to operate in a more voyeuristic space, leading to his unique pieces of art. As part of his process, he blends figuration and abstraction, giving him creative room to create emotionally hypnotic, gestural works. An example of this is a series he developed dedicated to the late James Byrd Jr., who was murdered by white supremacists in Jasper, Texas in 1998. A later series, called “Ballers,” showcased the decline of African American men in Major League Baseball, pointing to racial inequalities.

His more recent work celebrates positive aspects of Diggs’ life, reflecting his experiences as an African American man in pursuit of his dreams.

Diggs was born in Croix Chapeau, France to a military family that supported his artistic and athletic desires. After graduating from Southeastern Massachusetts University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Painting, he expanded his international education by working for US Airways. He recently completed a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
