4Cs Breaks Ground for New Science and Engineering Center

On Tuesday, August 11 at 10:00 a.m., Cape Cod Community College officially broke ground on the new Frank and Maureen Wilkens Science and Engineering Center on the West Barnstable campus. President John Cox was joined by Carol Gladstone, Commissioner of the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM), Tammy Saben, Chair of the Cape Cod Community College Board of Trustees, and co-chairs of the College’s $10 million Capital Campaign, Trish Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Zudy, and Corey Calla, President of SencorpWhite to officially kick off construction of the new $38 million building.

“Today is a significant moment in the history of our College and for our region,” said John Cox, President of Cape Cod Community College. “For many years, across many boards, faculty, deans, presidents, Governors, Lieutenant Governors, elected officials, donors – we have had had a shared vision for this building. To officially break ground on what will be the new hub for STEM education for the Cape, Islands and beyond is immensely gratifying, and we’re thrilled to get to work.”

In July 2018, with immense support from our local State Delegation, Governor Charlie Baker signed a bond bill guaranteeing $25 million to the College for a new Science and Engineering Building. The total project cost is $38 million, with the College putting $3 million in the project. Anchored by co-chairs Calla and Kennedy, the “Future is Now” Capital Campaign will raise the additional $10 million. In December 2018, Mrs. Maureen Wilkens, a visionary and generous benefactor of the College, contributed $5 million towards the project: the largest single donation in the College’s history and among the largest single gifts in the history of community colleges nationwide. In total, the campaign has raised 92% of the funding goal with $3.2 million remaining.

“I want to make sure, with this new building, Cape Cod Community College will be able to provide the state-of-the-art STEM education required in the 21^st century,” said Maureen Wilkens. “It is my hope and expectation that many generous individuals and businesses will step forward to join me in supporting the College as it builds this innovative science and engineering center.”

Other lead donors to the campaign include The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, Thomas and Trish Kennedy, Sencorp White, Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, The Kelley Foundation, and two Anonymous Donors.

The existing lecture halls and science building structures on campus will be demolished in 2020. Occupancy is targeted for Spring 2023.
