4Cs and Cape Regional STEM Network Launch Local Events for MA STEM Week October 19-23

Cape Cod Community College and the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network are coordinating local events for Massachusetts STEM Week across the Cape & Islands from October 19-23. All educators, students, families, employers, and organizations are encouraged to take part in any of the events that are planned.

Designed to enhance and promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and activities, the third annual STEM Week will be a mix of virtual and in-person events, lessons, speaker panels, and design challenges, all adapted for the new school and work environments as we all continue to find new ways forward in the COVID-19 public health emergency.

“During these difficult times, we can see how STEM literacy and education play such a critical role for us all,” said Bridget Burger, Director of the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network, which is housed at Cape Cod Community College. “There are so many great STEM activities happening here on the Cape & Islands—STEM Week is a chance to showcase the great work that people in our communities are doing every day. Everyone is welcome to be a part of STEM Week.”

STEM Week is a collaborative effort between the Executive Office of Education; the STEM Advisory Council, which works to generate interest and support from the business community for STEM Week activities and is co-chaired by Lt. Governor Polito, Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Executive Chairman Jeffrey Leiden; and the Commonwealth’s nine Regional STEM Networks, which plan and coordinate activities with local school communities, community leaders and business partners.

“Across our Commonwealth, nurses and doctors are saving lives, scientists are working furiously to develop a vaccine, and advanced manufacturers quickly shifted gears to produce personal protective equipment,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, Co-Chair of the STEM Advisory Council. “Battling COVID-19 highlighted how crucial the need is for young people to study science, technology, engineering and math, and our administration remains committed to paving pathways to STEM careers and education for students in and out of the classroom.”

This year, STEM Week is sponsoring seven statewide STEM design challenges at no cost to K-12 educators and students, in partnership with leading STEM organizations. STEM Week also encourages teachers and employers to develop new and creative ways to host STEM Week events to highlight opportunities that exist in science, technology, engineering and math locally.

Anyone with an idea for a STEM Week event is encouraged to register their event with the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network here: www.capecodstemweek.org to receive promotion on the statewide STEM Week site.

To encourage participation in STEM Week activities, the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network is hosting a series of planning meetings to help people take part in existing events, share inspiration for hosting events virtually, and foster collaboration.
