4Cs Students Take On 'Bright Star'

by Tribekah Jordan

“Bright Star,” a play opening April 11 at 4Cs, explores “life, loss, love, and laughter,” according to one of its stars.

It will be staged April 11 through April 20 at the Tilden Arts Center studio theater.

“Bright Star” was written by comedian Steve Martin and singer Edie Brickell. Their collaboration tells the story of main character Alice Murphy’s journey through love, loss, hope, and redemption in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia from the 1920s to the 1940s. This production was brought together by Vana Trudeau, 4Cs program coordinator for the Performing Arts Program. As the cast and crew are busily preparing for the upcoming show, we spoke to 4Cs actor Connor McLeod, who plays the male lead, Billy Cane.

Q: What made you choose to act in “Bright Star”?

A: After watching a production of “Bright Star,” I was inspired to audition for this exciting and unique musical. Bright Star is a powerfully poignant story with an incredible musical score and amazing choreography.

Q: Do you feel connected to your character?

A: Over the last few months, I have certainly developed a connection to Billy Cane. Billy is a young man returning home from the war, who sets out on an adventure to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. Throughout the story, he maintains an unwavering sense of optimism, despite life’s obstacles and challenges. Billy’s passion and commitment to family and friends, as well as his enthusiastic and positive outlook, are truly inspirational and resonate very strongly with me. I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing this character to life on stage.

Q: Why should people see the play? Is there a feeling you hope the audience will leave with after seeing “Bright Star”?

A: “Bright Star” is a story that explores life, loss, love, and laughter, as told through the experiences of wonderfully humane characters. It is a show truly not to be missed, and I think that audiences will be deeply moved and inspired by this incredible production.
