Barnstable Seniors in Your Area!

by Yasmine Tavares

As you sit in class, you’re probably wondering, “How is a student that young in my class?” That classmate is most likely a dual enrollment student and lives a totally different life than you. Here’s some different perspectives of students who you might be seated next to on a day-to-day basis! These are all Barnstable High School seniors on 4Cs campus this semester:

Q.How many classes are you taking here at 4Cs this semester?

A. I’m just taking one class this semester, stats.

Q. How many hours are you spending on campus per week?

A. About 2-3 hours, wait wrong. 5-6 hours per week.

Q. What’s your schedule look like outside of campus?

A. Well I also go to BHS [Barnstable High School] and I’m there for three blocks of my day and I volunteer at an elementary school about three hours a week and church a couple nights a week.

Q. What are 3 pros and 3 cons of the dual enrollment program?

A. So I don’t know which one is pros and which one is cons so I’m gonna say positives and negatives. Pros: I can spend more time at home or doing other things apart from school, I get to have a bit of a college experience before actually going to college, getting a sense of how hard classes actually are, and teachers see me as more mature and independent and aren’t so tough on me. Cons: I need to be more responsible about time and make sure I don’t be late to any classes, I don’t get a full senior year because I’m not in school much, and I need to stay on top of my work more often because there are less people checking up on me.

Q. How many classes are you taking here at 4Cs this semester?

A. Three classes, Biology II with lab, Psychology, and English Comp. II.

Q. How many hours are you spending on campus per week?

A. About 11 hours and a half.

Q. What’s your schedule look like outside of campus?

A. Drama makes up for most of my after-school life, being like four hours after school and various different clubs, plus volunteering.

Q. What are 3 pros and 3 cons of the dual enrollment program?

A. Pros: More free time and freedom, college gen ed credits [better than AP classes], and pre-college experience to get me prepared for college. Cons: I do not see my school friends much, not a regular senior year and I have to sacrifice going to events because of classes, and some work is not as challenging as work I’ve had in the past.

Q. How many classes are you taking here at 4Cs this semester?

A. Around 5 classes a semester.

 Q. How many hours are you spending on campus per week?

A. Depends but usually around eight.

 Q. What’s your schedule look like outside of campus?

A. I usually have three club meetings a week [not counting drama club] that are around 30 minutes, I have drama club rehearsals every day other than Friday from 4-6 p.m. or 7-2 p.m. depending on the day occasionally a weekend rehearsal from 1-4 p.m., I have another show I’m doing with rehearsals 6-9 p.m. a couple night a week and usually a Saturday rehearsal 1-4 p.m., I am a teacher assistant on Saturdays 9-10:30 a.m., that’s the stuff that’s consistent. I also have college auditions which mess with my weekend schedule.

Q. What are 3 pros and 3 cons of the dual enrollment program?

A. Three cons: high school schedule and college schedule not lining up and missing out on in school events, less time with school friends, missing out on classes I liked at the high school. Three pros: flexible schedule, taking classes that I want to take [more variety of classes], college credit which can make college cheaper.

Q. How many classes are you taking here at 4Cs this semester?

A. Three classes. General Bio II, Calculus II, and English Comp II.”

Q. How many hours are you spending on campus per week?

A. Around 11 hours a week.”

Q. What’s your schedule look like outside of campus?

A.  My schedule is pretty free outside of campus, I ride horses outside of school so I’m at my barn three times a week. I also work at an ice cream shop which will be opening within the next month.

Q. What are 3 pros and 3 cons of the dual enrollment program?

A. Three pros of the dual enrollment program would definitely be the freedom you have being a ‘college student’ with less time in the classroom, the easy transition from high school to college classes it provides and getting college credits before graduating high school. Three cons of the dual enrollment program would be that it makes it harder to be involved in your high school, having different schedules as your friends still in high school, and the difference in your workload since less time is spent in the classroom.
