Titanic 25th Anniversary Re-Release

by Makayla Crowley

In 1997, one of the top-grossing films of all time was released. “Titanic,” directed by James Cameron, is the love story between Rose (Kate Winslet), a first-class passenger, and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), a third-class passenger, on the RMS Titanic in 1912. Twenty five years after the film’s initial release, it is back in theaters -- in 3D.

I picked the most luxurious theater near me to experience the showing myself.

I brought my classmate Calla Patterson along with me. The theater of choice was the AMC Theater in Dartmouth. The theater was full, and soon enough the lights went down. Something about being in the movie theaters compared to watching a film at home is so immersive. The energy is so good because everyone shares an excitement to watch the upcoming film.

The story of the Titanic is so emotional, and I feel as though it was a good idea to re-release the film -- not only to celebrate the success of the film itself, but to keep the memory of this tragedy alive. This movie is a classic by now, and the “uptown girl” trope in the person of Winslet’s Rose elevates this film to the next level (then 20-year-old heartthrob DiCaprio makes this film pretty great, too).  The love between Jack and Rose, who meet only days before the sinking of the Titanic, is so passionate and exciting. The film itself is pretty long, with a screen time of 3 hours and 16 minutes, but every minute is worth it. Plot twist after plot twist, everything falls into place with a tragic chain of events. As a viewer you really get so many perspectives throughout the film, ranging from Rose’s fiancè, who classifies himself as “almost royalty,” to the poorest members on the ship.

Love at first sight may or may not be real, but this film for sure makes it seem possible. I wish theaters were able to do this with more movies. The ambience and overall experience makes it a nice excuse to get out with friends, or even alone.
