Professor Daniels Helps Students Find Voice

by Zora Fiset Morin

Professor Tyler Daniels has been teaching here at 4C's for a couple of years. Among his classes: Human Communication, Survey of Mass Communication and Radio Production.

This is Daniels’ first semester teaching Voice and Diction. He got the idea after he recently wrote a novel and turned it into an audio book. A colleague suggested that Daniels teach a Voice and Diction class, and he loved the idea.

Since Daniels was given free reign of how he would like to teach the class, he decided to draw from his own experience as a voice actor. He wanted to help people who wanted to start in the voice acting industry but did not know how to.

“On the big spectrum, students are learning certain exercises that will enable them to really push the limits of their vocal range,” Daniels says when asked about what students learn and do in the class.

Daniels mentioned there being many fields within voice acting, including recording voice overs for commercials or public announcements, getting a gig for recording audio books, or they could get hired by a studio to dub foreign animated series.

He mentioned that if popularity continues to grow for the class and enough students maintain an interest, he would be interested in teaching the class semester after semester.

“Here are some helpful tricks of the trade: first of all, you cannot be shy, you can't be modest, you can't ever feel weird about voicing a certain character. It's losing yourself in a fantasy world, you're not you … you have to completely become that character. Also you can't take anything too personally, you cannot allow a professional rejection to affect how you see yourself,” Daniels says

Wyatt Falk, who is currently enrolled in the class, says he’s a fan of the course.

“I am really enjoying this class both as a way to stretch my creative legs and as a way to explore an industry that is normally really obscure and not easy to understand. I would recommend this class to anyone who has any interest whatsoever in voice acting or anything that uses it. This class is very beginner friendly, and while you will be pushed a bit it is not in a way you cannot handle.”
