Smiles were everywhere.
And no wonder. The atmosphere at the 2023 Cape Cod Media Conference was welcoming and fun.
Hosted by 4C’s and college radio station WKKL, the conference held April 14 at the new science building offered panel discussion, advice from professionals in the media world, and more. It was a way for people to try to network in different media forms and get their names recognized as well as trying to get tips.
President John Cox gave the first speech of the day and welcomed panelists and attendees.
The first panel took place after Cox’s speech and was given by five panelists; Stephanie Viva, Jonathan Thompson, Samir Elkamouny, and Scott Brewitt, who each gave advice about how to create one’s brand.
Following, there was a breakout session where a speech on “Fighting the Good Fight: How to Break into Journalism” was given by Mindy Todd, Brian Tarcy, Rachael Devaney, Koki Riley, and Tim Miller. At the same time, a speech on “Creating your own Media: Radio, Podcasting, and YouTube” was also being given by panelists, Kristen Eck, Tracy O’Leary, and Stephanie Viva.
There were several other speeches given by different panelists on ways to enter the media world and never giving up. Those other panels included “‘Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk’: Connect with
your Community”, “Principles of Career Management”, “The Writing Life”, “Voice Acting”, and “Breaking into the Industry and Getting the Job!”
Allyson Johnson, one of the panelist for “That’s Your Opinion: How to Become a Film Critic”, had come from Maine to appear in person.
“I came here to talk about film criticism, but mainly I wanted to make sure there was a voice closer to the generation of students who are in school right now,” Johnson said after the panel discussion. “I also wanted to make sure there was going to be a woman on the panel, because it is very important to me, especially since we view films differently. I had a lot of fun and I really like these events.”

Students said they received good advice at the conference.
“It seems that everyone has kind of pointed towards even if it is hard, if you really want to do it, it’s important that you do it,” says Jenna Schmidt.

“Speakers gave me a lot of constructive criticism for some commercials that I had sent them and getting advice back, so I'm just trying to take that information trying to elevate my game. I feel like I know myself and I understand the capability but to receive advice on things is just crucial in getting me to the next level,” says Marcus Hann.
