The Honors Society at Cape Cod Community College

by John McDowell

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is an international honor society whose members are made up of those who have achieved some form of academic excellence in their pursuit of a college degree.

Like most colleges across the United States, Cape Cod Community College (4C’s) has its own chapter of PTK – Alpha Epsilon Mu.

Alpha Epsilon Mu is led by President Faith Doherty-Unwin, and is advised by faculty member Dr. Rebecca Griffin of the 4C’s language and literature department.

In their roles, Griffin and Doherty-Unwin help to organize general meetings, activities like trivia and hikes, Alpha Epsilon Mu officer elections – which will take place on April 22 - and much more.

In the most recent general meeting on April 5, Alpha Epsilon Mu discussed graduation, new inductees, and the Honors in Action program.

The Honors in Action program is just one of the many ways that Alpha Epsilon Mu is looking to give back to Cape Cod Community College. The goal of the program, according to the PTK.org website, is to “connect with your local chapter and other students like you to identify and research an issue on your campus or in your larger community. Then, you’ll turn that research into a plan of action by creating a project or event that meets a specific need in your area. You’ll expand your worldview and be able to give back through service.”

In addition to the Honors in Action program, Alpha Epsilon Mu also looks to give back to 4C’s through PTK’s College Project, which seeks to strengthen ties between individual PTK chapters and college administrations through the completion of a project that will benefit the institution as a whole. In Alpha Epsilon Mu’s case, the College Project will center on the college’s mission statement.

If you’re interested in helping Phi Theta Kappa and their Alpha Epsilon Mu chapter to facilitate growth in the 4C’s community, you can donate to https://www.ptk.org, or email Griffin for specific ways to assist.
