MainSheet reflection: Jessica Currier, Co-Managing Editor

by Jessica Currier

Journalism has always been a topic that interested me. I remember my older sister taking an interest when she was back in high school and university, and it always seemed like she was enjoying the thrilling stories that she would follow. When in high school, I loved to write -- still do, hence why I loved choosing writing classes here at Cape Cod Community College. My experience here at the college has been nothing short of wonderful in every sense, even if it was all online. I actually loved the fact it was online, although I think I may be in the minority there.

I recall picking journalism 1 with Professor Kerry Drohan, who was also my adviser at the time, in the fall. I had also taken a film review class with him which I adored, and so I chose to take another class of his, especially since that interest in the topic was already there. I loved every minute, from interacting with Kerry and the class, to interviewing other professors about their knowledge and life experience as well as happenings at the school. The passion that this colleges’ professors acquire is amazing, so they made it pretty easy to make interesting stories and profiles.

As the semester went on, Kerry mentioned that he was retiring, and Professor Tim Miller was going to take the reins of both the introductory course, as well as the independent study which I had already decided I would enroll in. Tim has been incredible, between his support for students and knowledge, his enthusiasm and humor, and balancing between both classes, students and their stories and more. He also has enlightened me even more on film reviews. Although I only have managed one so far, I have plans to do many more and am prepared to share them with Professor Miller whenever I can. He gives great advice, and I now have loads of amazing information and tips to keep in mind when I am watching films I plan to review!

It has been incredible to be here at 4C’s, every last moment has lit me up and made me want to be the best student I can be in the future, and not only that – be the best I can be in anything I do in life. MainSheet is an incredible paper for a relatively small school, and I could not be more proud of the writers this semester in journalism 1. I have no doubt that the future managing editors, podcast creators and other future journalists will carry the paper in the right direction.
