Guest column: From the new SGA president

by Thalles DeSouza

What a great time for the Student Government Association!

A year ago I would never have guessed life would be the way it is now. Joining the Student Government Association (SGA) was the best decision I've made when I arrived to 4C’s! Becoming president of such an important organization at Cape Cod Community College is an honor. I am happy and honored to serve. Now it’s time to make things happen!

I’ve experienced many people asking me how long I’ve been a student here at 4C’s, and it’s funny to see their reaction when I tell them that it’s been only one year. Being someone that cares and loves people made me come a long way in a very short period of time. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our student body!

This week we’re getting ready to have a special election to fulfill all our SGA vacant positions. Five open positions remain for Student Government: vice-president, treasurer, historian, parliamentarian and student trustee. We already have many students signing up for those positions and very excited to be a leader on this campus. Many people don't realize this, but SGA is the main student organization on campus, and that's where we get to advocate for students and make big changes inside of our college.

What we have planned is crucial for the future of SGA, and I'm so excited! We’re planning to work on "campus food insecurity," with so many ideas and actions to make sure our students won’t face any type of hunger while they’re taking classes on campus. We’re expecting to bring students together this year, and get more people engaged in what’s happening.

Some people don’t know about this, but I have never in my life had a voice to speak, or a chance to change the world around me. Coming from an area of the world that is full of gangs and corruption, my old neighborhood is one of the most dangerous in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many of my family and friends lost their lives in shootings. I almost died multiple times and this was one of the reasons why my family and I moved to the USA. Thank God I'm here today.

SGA has given me a voice and an opportunity to be a leader on this college campus and make sure we all have enough support. We all have a voice, and we all have a story to tell! It's definitely a lifetime privilege, and I can't wait to continue representing the Cape Cod Community College students, now as SGA president.

I believe we never know our potential until the only thing we have left is the power to fight for what we want. At this time, with ALL I have left, I'm definitely fighting for what I want, which is representing the students at 4C’s! Thank you, Jesus!
