Economics Club Covers 'Realm of Opportunities'
by Justus Canto
The Economics Club's goal is to improve 4C’s students' knowledge about economics at multiple levels (global, national, and individual) and how it can be of use. The club has been inactive for a few years, but this year it restarted. During a recent meeting at the Grossman Cafe, the atmosphere was friendly, with good communication among members. The meeting mainly involved planning future events and discussing the club’s budget.
Club officers include Ben Chase, president; Thalles De Souza, vice-president; Brendon Da Silva, secretary; Sophie Sullivan, treasurer; and Izzy Soque, public relations.
Two other group members, Kristyna Wills and Elizabeth Anderson, responded to a survey about their experience with the club.
Q: Why did you join the economics club?
Wills: I joined the Economics Club because I am an online student, so I was hoping to immerse myself into the student body more. At the club fair this year, our president was very convincing with recruits, and I was curious about the idea of this new startup club!
Anderson: I joined the economics club because I’ve known Ben Chase for a long time and he’s the president of the club.
Q: What do you find interesting about economics at this point?
Wills: Economics is a very vague, umbrella term that describes many different things. It is a realm of opportunities.
Anderson: Economics is important to learn for everybody.
Q: What will you use this for in the future?
Wills: This club encourages a sense of unity because we realize that people are all influenced under the same economy. Being a part of this club means I can experience what it means to bond as a community. These skills can be used for future endeavors.
Anderson: You can use economics in the future for multiple tasks and your own finances.
Q: Were you familiar with economics before you started this class?
Wills: I was enrolled in a quick-term macroeconomics class and a business class prior to joining the club. I know a little about the ways economies around the world function.
Anderson: Yes, I have people in my family who have an economics degree.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention?
Wills: I am very excited to be a part of the club!
Anderson: No.
Q: Do you plan on pursuing a career that involves economics?
Wills: Currently, I am still not sure what I want to do as a career. I believe that with any job, economics will be a part of your life.
Anderson: Maybe, but probably not.
