Dungeons & Dragons Club: Where the Adventure Begins

by Dolfina Allan

The Dungeons & Dragons Club, otherwise known as D&D Club, is the place for any student to start a new adventure and let their imagination run wild.

The club has a discord server in which most of the communication occurs. The meetings can be sporadic due to the nature of the club. Due to the preparation of the campaigns, a single session requires a lot of prep time and only 4-5 players can participate, making the meeting subject to the specific players.

Maya Kapuscinski, the president of the D&D Club, discussed her experiences with the club:

Q: How long have you been in D&D Club?

A: I have been in the D&D Club since last year’s fall semester. I started around early October, which was the first we were able to get an official meeting going.

Q: Why did you join?

A: I specifically joined due to my friends. At first, I had no idea the D&D Club existed, and I probably wouldn’t have known if my friend hadn’t mentioned it in            our 3D Design and Analysis class. After that, three of my friends and I decided we wanted to play a campaign together, and that’s what pushed us to join the club.

Q: How long has D&D Club been around?

A: The D&D Club started last year. Before that, I believe it was part of the Gaming Club, but once we were able to get enough members, we became an official club with more and more members joining throughout the year.

Q: Do you enjoy the activities, or wish there were more of something else

A: The activities D&D Club does and helps out with are always a blast! We've planned a movie night for the club that will be coming up and last year we helped in events like the Spring Scavenger Hunt. This year we have a lot more big events and trips coming up that we're eager to start planning and preparing for!

Q: Would you recommend this club to other students?

A: Absolutely! D&D club is meant to be a place where people can participate in campaigns and talk about D&D, but, more importantly, it's a place where people can connect with others and make friends through similar interests. I have met people and made friends with completely different interests outside of D&D, and we have been able to talk on multiple different subjects. Joining the D&D club never exclusively means just talking about D&D or playing in campaigns, I think that’s one of the best parts about it.

Q: When and how long have you been interested in D&D? What or who got you into it?

A: I had been interested in D&D for a few years. I knew nothing about the game, but I was always intrigued and wanted to play a campaign to try it out. However, my middle school and high school weren't full of a lot of people willing to try something           like D&D, so I never was truly able to play a session. As I mentioned before, my friends had gotten me into the D&D Club; however, they also got me to finally get into D&D itself. Those three friends taught me how to play D&D, and create characters, and broadened my horizons.

Q: Any other thoughts?

A: I think an important thing I should mention is that regardless of what club it is, you should always try to join one. It would be amazing for newcomers to be introduced to the D&D Club; however, I also realize D&D isn't for everyone. I think that's what's amazing about 4C's. No matter what your interest is, anyone can find a group with similar interests or hobbies. It's why I'm extremely grateful for the other clubs like Gaming, LGBTQ+, STEM, Anime, etc. These aren't just other clubs, they're groups of people who share similar interests and want to hang out and get to know each other.

Anyone looking to join D&D Club can stop by the main desk in the admissions building, Building No. 2, on the first floor and ask for Alisha Fabia.
