4C’s Students Wear Belongings of Importance

by Jenna Schmidt

Is fashion a form of self-expression?

According to two Cape Cod Community College students, it is.

The accessories they chose to wear to school recently demonstrated their personal style, therefore demonstrating aspects of themselves.

"I chose this specific watchband because my girlfriend has a matching one and it’s like a promise,” says Margaret Gayton, a second-year student at 4C’s.

She equated the matching wristbands to a promise ring; even though the watch is worn for functionality it is also a testament to her relationship. By wearing this specific watchband, she is representing her relationship, an aspect of herself, therefore expressing herself through fashion.

“I got it at a renaissance fair,” he said. “When it comes to me, I just kind of throw on whatever,” says Storm, a second-year student at 4C’s, says of his skull necklace.

A Renaissance fair is an outdoor event meant to re-create experiences of a Renaissance era. Visitors of such events can expect to be sent back in time through the clothing and accessories they see as well as the food and music. Storm’s necklace represents the aspect of himself that enjoys such events.
