4C’s Student Paints Her Way In July

A student at Cape Cod Community College named Sarah “Bean” Kearns recently attended a summer class in Truro. She attended a class taught by Lauren Young “Changing Your Approach to Painting,” from July 17 to July 21 at the Truro Center of the Arts.
“At first, Laurence Young’s lesson was a bit challenging. I had to drastically alter how I painted. I learned how to recognize and make use of negative and positive space in the painting course,” says Kearns.
The class allowed her to explore new ins and outs of painting and experience different styles of painting too.
“Most people who paint feel a sense of flow; it almost seems instinctive, like reading a kid’s book; it is simple... Getting into this flow was challenging, but that is useful because it means I was really learning,” says Kearns.
One piece of work that she did was drawing scribbles on a flat canvas and then had to paint over it and incorporate the scribbles into the painting.
Sarah got a lot out of this class.
“What I have really learned is that I will have a creative career path. I never would have imagined being able to pursue a career in the arts when I was young,” says Kearns.
She was told of the opportunity through Professor Nathalie Ferrier. The college had also given her a scholarship through donations to help her attend the class.
