The Laptop-Loaner Program at 4Cs

by Caitlin Grosso

As technology continues to become a salient tool in the higher education system, the need for equipment will also increase. For a student, managing finances is a burden that is already much to shoulder without even mentioning that cringe-worthy word: textbooks. Not only must students be expected to juggle the costs of courses, reading materials, and transportation fees, but a personal computer as well. Even the cheapest laptop on the market runs at over $200.

The fact of the matter is that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the game for learning. And if you are a student located a-ways from campus or if remote learning is simply your gig, then this expensive equipment is a must-have for your success. That’s why 4C’s decided to take a stand for equity and establish the Loaner Laptop program, run by Yvette Raven, IT director of educational technology and client services.

Q: What kind of hardware/technology is available to students in need?

A: We loan out the following [laptop] models: HP ProBook 440 G4, G5, G7, G8, as well as the HP ProBook 640 G5.

Q: How can they get this equipment?

A: Students may apply via a Microsoft form, titled “laptop loaner program application.” The form can be found on the My4Cs portal beneath the “Student Support” section.

Q: Are there any fees involved in the process of acquiring it?
A: No fees. You must be enrolled in at least 3 credits to qualify.

Q: How long do students get to keep the technology?

A: By semester.
Q: Why do you think it's important for students in need to have technology readily available for them to use?
A: For the "modern" student there is a need for flexibility, mobility, and access to the tools to be successful in or out of the classroom. We have multiple modalities of education: Fully online, Hyflex (remote and face-to-face), in person, and remote. We promote an equity agenda to ensure every student has access to the needed technology in and out of the classroom. We know students have limited funds for books, transportation, and life necessities. We want all students to have the means to participate, and by loaning laptops, we promote inclusion. The true need is evident in the fact that there is a waiting list.
Q: What kind of impact did the COVID-19 pandemic have on this program with respect to its budget and student demand?
A: The college made a smart investment in students during the pandemic by providing laptops to ensure the continuation of studies. We also provided the faculty with the same opportunity. This laptop loaner program was integral to the success of students who wanted to continue pursuing their education. This had never been done before, but now we know this program will continue and expand as the needs increase.
Q: Lastly, as technology becomes more prominent in higher education, do you think this program's demand will also increase?
A:
Absolutely! When we introduce a program that has improved student learning outcomes, our goal is to expand on that success.
