Professor James Morgan Talks LGBTQ Club

by Jamison Feeley

The LGBTQ club at Cape Cod Community College is headed by Professor James Morgan, who teaches math at the college. Professor Morgan discusses why the LBTQ club is an important club for the school and for the community. Morgan says, “This club is about making sure people who have been marginalized their whole lives have a voice and a place to feel valued. More than that, this gives folks a chance to share their stories, gain support, and educate others about the difficulties and moments of success they have encountered as they have matured.” This club has 15 active members. Professor James Morgan describes how to spread awareness about the LGBTQ community.

“It takes the courage of those who have made progress in the journey to talk about their experiences. Most people have an LGBTQ+ family member even if they are not aware of it. Sometimes people who are allies come out in support of this community (like PFLAG and the like) and sometimes people in the community come out when they can directly advocate and feel ready to do so,” says Professor Morgan. He speaks about the importance of awareness for the LGBTQ community and how it is often connected to pain. “It is always sad that awareness is often brought to the forefront of tragedy,” says Professor Morgan. “It is clear that…(the) question (of awareness) is twofold in its answer: brave testimony from those who are in the community and brave testimony from allies/family/advocates.'' The LGBTQ club works to raise awareness apart from just these tragedies. Some of their events include Halloween dance, a Trans Awareness Day, and The Winter Social. They are also planning a trip to Provincetown. The LGBTQ club has some very exciting events upcoming, and they will continue to work to spread awareness and support to their community.
