Gaining Friends and Getting Goals
by Sam Shanahan
I am a first-semester student here at 4C’s and wanted to make some friends around campus. Starting a conversation has been something that has come easy to me ever since I was younger. This skill always comes in handy when trying to make friends. Although I made friends during my first year at Syracuse University, I don’t have many that are still on Cape during the winter.
The gym at Cape Cod Community College is a great place to shoot some hoops, relieve some stress and make friends on campus. Seeing that 4C’sdoesn’t have any Division 1, 2, or 3 sports teams, having an open gym is a great opportunity to play some sports with some fellow classmates. Basketballs are available to borrow at the Student Wellness Office. Students are welcome to come by to shoot hoops or organize their own pickup games. Finding a pickup game can be as easy as walking into the gym and someone yelling, “,Yoyou two want to play?”
Making friends through classes is definitely a great place to start when you are in an unfamiliar place. Another great way is to go to open gyms.
I happened to go to the open gym on a recent Wednesday and saw a fellow classmate, but I also met six other people who wanted to shoot hoops. Eventually, we were asked to play a pickup game and we happily said yes. Just like that, I knew six people whom I could ask to play ball. I understand that sports aren’t everyone’s interest, but there are many other events going on around campus as well.
