'Fiveplay': Sex, Humor and Heartbreak
by Amber Rivard
“Fiveplay” is filled with humor, F-bombs, and personality. It touches on grief, acceptance, and family problems.
The 4C’s production of Erica Smith's play follows six people: Keegan, Monty, Sawyer, Avery, Emerson and Ray. Everyone except Keegan has multiple romantic relationships going on. Their core relationship values are trust and openness.
The family is preparing for their upcoming “F***giving,” their take on a usual Thanksgiving: food, family, and thankfulness, but with sex afterward. While preparing for the big event, they are interrupted when a text message comes in saying Keegan’s grandfather has died.
Coming together to support Keegan, they debate whether to cancel their day because the funeral is on the same day. Meanwhile, the characters take us back in time to depict some of the problems they faced with their families as a result of their chosen lifestyle.
In doing so, “Fiveplay” incorporates the challenges of a blood-related family’s disapproval. It also reminds you that just because someone does not accept you doesn't mean everyone won't. Finding your forever home is possible.
The “Fiveplay” cast does an outstanding job of depicting personalities that draw you in from the start.
Jasper Smith delivers a lively and engaging performance as Emerson. Matthew Neil, as Ray, has you laughing with every word that comes out of his mouth. Nic Jones gives a stellar performance as Monty and Sawyer's mother. Sail Fisichella provides the emotional core of the play as Keegan. Trevor Grimes provides a contrasting funny but serious attitude as Sawyer. Robert O’Connor not only does an exceptional job as Avery but also as Sawyer's father in a thought-provoking way.
“Fiveplay” has a dual cast. The other cast members taking on the roles include Josh Devlin, Colleen Ellis, Giana Sosa and Kat Frommeyer.
Directed by Jess Wilson, the production incorporates sexual humor and empathy, as it is funny and heartwarming.
The show continues at the Tilden Arts Center at 7 p.m. Nov 18 and 19, and 2 p.m. Nov. 19. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fiveplay-by-erica-smith-tickets-431814929077
