‘Fiveplay’ Promises to Challenge Norms

The 4C’s theater program is launching its new fall production with “Fiveplay.” “Fiveplay” is written by Erica Smith and will be directed by visiting guest artist Jess Wilson. A clever play on the word “foreplay,” “Fiveplay” is described as “an affectionate look at polyamory and the modern family.” Polyamory, generally defined as romantic relationships involving multiple people, comes with unique challenges, many of which are explored in the play.
The selection process for the fall production was elaborate. Five plays were selected by administration and voted upon by performing arts students.
“The theater department had circulated a poll to the department students at the end of the 2022 spring semester,” explains Matthew Kohler, the production’s scene designer. From there, the results were clear: students were excited about “Fiveplay.” Kohler is equally excited.
“As I am the productions scenic designer, as well as the department's stagecraft instructor, I am very much looking forward to the collaborative process between myself and my students on the creation of the scenic elements for the show,” Kohler says. “We are trying to work a lot closer with the students (and) involve them in the process as much as possible.” He promises that the show, which starts running on Nov. 10, will be a “very out-of-the-box project.”
