Welcoming Back Dr. Kathy Vranos
by Jade Francis
Previously the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Adult Education here at Cape Cod Community College (4C’s), Kathy Vranos has returned as the new Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. After roughly a year and a half with 4C’s, Vranos accepted a position as Vice President with Dean College in 2019. However, when she caught wind of the job opportunity back in her safe haven of Cape Cod, she knew she had to take it.
“There is nothing like a pandemic to make you reflect on your life’s work.” Said Vranos, “While I learned a lot and enjoyed being at a small, private four-year college, I wanted to serve my community.” Dean College was the first institution of higher education she worked at outside of a community college. She felt a significant absence of the connection that she experienced while in the public sector.

At 4C’s, Vranos felt as though there was much more collaboration than at a private college such as Dean. This was a major factor that brought her back to her local community. “There is greater participation in decision making from faculty, staff, students, and board members. I like that, want that, and respect that.” She said.
In her new position, Vranos is responsible for academic retention. The instant she was granted her position, her mind was already at work. She strives to ensure that everyone is receiving support and the academic aid they need to guarantee a substantial education, especially during the atypical situation surrounding Covid-19.
Not only is she delighted to escape the 55-mile commute to work each day, but Vranos also feels very fortunate to be back with her colleagues at 4C’s. She describes her coworkers as warm, talented, and wonderful. Many staff members reciprocate this joy to be working alongside her as well.
“It's exciting to work with Dr. Vranos because she is a real innovator.” Said English professor, Patricia Allen, “She is always on the lookout for ways to create interdisciplinary connections that will result in opportunities for students, like new programs and certifications.” Additionally, Allen emphasizes Vranos’ passion regarding equity and her methodical problem-solving skills as crucial for initiating change.
Thrilled to be working amongst Vranos again is Lisa Heller Boragine, a communications professor. She defines the new Vice President as focused, driven, and empathetic. “With her talents,” Boragine said, “she could be working anywhere, but she is a change agent who truly believes in the mission of a community college, so she’s here.”
Another communications professor, Tyler Daniels, was also very excited to hear the news of Vranos’ return. In her prior position as Dean, she consistently listened to Daniels’ ideas regarding important 4C’s matters. “She routinely attended and participated in our meetings to ensure that nothing was lost in the scrimmage between faculty and administration.” Said Daniels, “Kathy was more than a skilled Dean-- she is a genuinely pleasant woman to work with.”
