Radio Club: Talk of the Town

by Zachariah Supka

Radio club is back on the student horizon and better than ever. The radio station WKKL has been around since 1977 and has been going strong for the most part. The last few years WKKL hasn’t been as strong as it used to be but now it’s on the comeback. Led by new advisors Professor Lisa Zinsius and Professor Tyler Daniels, the radio station is on its way to become a fun new space for students to try a new path and hobby.

Not only do current students appreciate WKKL for what has put them onto a new path, but alumni share this appreciation as well. Alexis Engelman is an alumnus from Cape Cod Community College (4C’s) and found a creative path for herself through WKKL. She has a show called “Midday Movie Madness” that aired in October of 2005. Her show covers many aspects of entertainment going all the way from movies to the history of celebrities to video games.

“Right now it’s actually on Facebook Live, but I hope to get back!” Said Engelman, “Whenever things pop up, there I go. I have my little show called Flashback Fun I do every week and I’m starting to look at some October films this week.”

With the revival of 90.7, new faces come around. Quinn Miller is a first-year student at 4C’s and is a media major focused towards film. As this may be a requirement for him, he also sees it as an opportunity to learn.

“It’s a requirement for my major,” Miller said, “but I also think I can learn some skills from here to translate to film, like both an audio and visual format, not just visual because both sides are important.” Radio broadcasting works as a requirement for many majors and many times has space for new people to jump in and get their show running.

The WKKL station on campus isn’t only used for radio shows. There are now two new sound booths that are considered the podcasting rooms which opens up a whole new variety of radio. Podcasting is considered the future of radio, as you can talk about whatever you want as the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) can’t dictate what can and can’t go on a podcast.

A student that has expressed more interest in podcasting rather than a radio show is Max Kennedy. Kennedy is just in the Radio Broadcasting class but looks forward to becoming a member of the radio club. When talking about his preference on podcasting over a radio show he said, “I prefer podcasts because of the time that you can put into it and you can give a little more thought instead of an on the fly one take that you would do with a radio show.”

The radio club is always looking for new and ambitious members. If you have an interest, do not hesitate to reach out to Lisa Zinsius at lzinsius@capecod.edu, or Tyler Daniels at tdaniels@capecod.edu.
