One Book Event: What the Spring Holds

by Charlotte Peak

Literature is a fantastic way to bring people together; there is a genre for everyone, creating an opportunity for connection and reflection. The One College/One Book event here at Cape Cod Community College (4C’s) is set to take place this spring.

“The One College/One Book program is a Common Reading program that many colleges and universities promote.” Said Cindy Pavlos, a 4C’s administrative assistant. “It involves selecting a book with important or significant themes and promoting it across the entire campus - students, faculty, and staff - in an effort to get as many as possible reading and discussing the book. On our campus, the One Book program has existed for a long time.” Cindy Pavlos has been involved with the event for the last decade. She also serves as chair of the committee.

This event is great for students who are looking to get involved as there are no requirements, and students don’t need to read a whole book. “Students are invited to pick up a free copy from our college library, read as much as they like, and get involved in some of the spring activities.” Said Pavlos.

In past years the event has featured a multitude of stories, such as The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, The Martian by Andy Weir, and The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas to name a few. This program provides a wide range of genres for students.

This year, the focus will be centered on a series of books known as American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures, edited by America Ferrera. “A collection of stories, written by an amazing group of actors, artists, writers, and athletes.” Said Anne Cifelli, a member of the One Book committee and library staff here at 4C’s. “The entries are brief, making them easy to fit into a busy schedule; yet very affecting- some truly tragic and others laugh-out-loud funny.”

In order to have each year run smoothly, the featured book is chosen by a group of One Book committee members. Cifelli bacame a part of the One Book committee after it was suggested to her by a colleague. Faculty from all different departments, along with library staff and administrators, make up the 20+ One Book committee members.

The pandemic has impacted many things on campus, but safety precautions are instated to host events while keeping students and staff safe.

“For the spring semester, we plan to host a Read Aloud (both in person and via zoom), a student debate, and perhaps some other events.” Said Pavlos.

The One College/One Book event emphasizes togetherness within the campus community. Students are encouraged to participate, with an easygoing atmosphere. Contact Cindy Pavlos at cpavlos@capecod.edu with any questions or interest.
