On Wednesday, October 20, the first Cape Cod Community College (4C’s) Covid and Flu vaccination clinic was held in Grossman Commons. From 10am to 2pm, 36 Flu vaccines and three Covid vaccines were administered. Approaching quickly is the second vaccination clinic being held from 2pm to 6pm on Thursday, October 28.
These vaccinations are free to all 4C’s students. 4C’s annually partners with the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment (BCDHE) to run a Flu shot clinic. For those who have health insurance, an insurance card is required. However, students will not be turned down or charged if they are not insured.
“On-campus Flu Clinics benefit the College community and the wider public by providing easy access to working students, faculty, and staff to receive a preventative Flu shot.” Said Patrick Preston, Dean of Health, Social Sciences, Human Services, and Business. Preston played a significant role in the organization of the Covid and Flu vaccination clinic.
To continue preventative measures surrounding Covid, the vaccine is recommended to be received yearly, similar to the Flu vaccination. By January of 2022, all students and staff who wish to take part in classes meeting in-person must provide proof that they received a Covid vaccination. The addition of the Covid vaccination to the yearly Flu vaccination clinic at 4C’s provides students with flexible and free access to helping stop continued spread of the intense Coronavirus.

“This type of clinic,” said Eva Stanley, Clinical Instructor in Medical Assisting, “offering both the flu and covid vaccines, really represents the ongoing goal to provide access and improve the overall health of the community by removing barriers.” This clinic is not only beneficial to health standards, but also to students that have not yet received a Covid Vaccination, but would like to be involved in on-campus learning in the spring.
CDC guidelines state that “COVID-19 vaccines may be administered without regard to timing of other vaccines. This includes simultaneous administration of COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines on the same day.” Students getting both vaccinations may experience additional discomfort, but it is still deemed safe.
Students can receive a Flu vaccine, a Covid vaccine, or both. Protecting oneself and the surrounded community, with no out-of-pocket cost, is a very important safety measure.
