Debate Club: Up and Running

by Charlotte Peak

Debate is a topic that plagues television screens during election month and has people up in arms. This week the Debate Club at Cape Cod Community College (4C’s) is the star of the show. Club President, Colleen Ellis, gives the rundown on what the Debate Club is all about, and why she took the leadership position.

“The objective of Debate Club is to share the world of debate with anyone who wants to learn or just appreciates civil, academic discussions.” Ellis said. The first year the Debate Club started running was in 2007. Ellis feels baffled to think that she was only six years old at that time. “Don’t worry,” She continued, “I started practicing debating at bedtime when I was much younger than six.”

The Debate Club is a safe space for students to share their opinions on any important topics whether it be a local or global matter. Ellis explained that the Debate Club changed her way of thinking in everyday life. “I examine every conversation as a negative and affirmative, I try to establish decorum with everyone I talk to.” She said. “The most important lesson that the debate club can provide for students at Cape Cod Community College is to always look at both sides of everything.”

Max Kennedy, a sophomore heading towards a degree in communications, agrees that debate club has transformed him for the better. He felt drawn to the Debate Club when he realized that speaking was a big part in college. In the past, he wasn’t as apt to publicly speak, never mind debate. “Communication was something I was very closed off to, but I had ambitions of starting something big in my life.” Kennedy said. For many students a debate club is a way for them to find themselves, and be better prepared to properly persuade in the future.

Due to many Covid rules and regulations the club was not allowed to proceed normally. The club is eager to attend tournaments now that Covid regulations seem to be lifting. They are always looking for new attendees as the club is just beginning again. “If someone was on the fence about joining Debate Club, send an email to anyone you are most comfortable with to see about attending a meeting.” Said Kennedy. “People have joined before and just viewed the debate as a spectator and that is totally fine.”

Lisa Boragine, and Arts and Communications Professor, is the advisor for the Debate Club at 4C’s. Kennedy describes her as an impeccable advisor. Her position is very fitting, as she often teaches Persuasive Communication in the Spring.

The debate club is a wonderful addition at 4C’s and this will hopefully give students a chance to get themselves out there, and practice their skills! They meet on Thursdays at 12:30. If anyone has any questions contact Professor Boragine at [email protected]
