Alejandra Cuadra Sanchez’s exhibition Longing for Belonging contemplates the process of creating a sense of belonging and a place to call home. Embracing clay, wood, mixed media, and sensibility she weaves, braids, and knots together her history—what was, what is, and what is to come. Feeling neither from here or there, Cuadra reconnects with her roots in Peru. While acknowledging her duality, she seeks home beyond the barriers of belonging.

Cuadra cites the Black American activist, feminist, and author bell hooks as inspiration. hooks stated that all aspects of life have “revealed to me that the treasures I was seeking were already mine. All my longing to belong, to find a culture of place…waiting for me to remember and to reclaim.” For Cuadra, as it is for hooks, to belong is not just a place. It is a state of mind.

Cuadra is shaped by experiences, texts, conversations, connections, and materiality that she uses to weave together into different allegories. She continues on learning, relearning, and unlearning what it means to belong and respect the gifts that nature and life provide. This is an exploration on what it means to belong within the body, soul, community, and the rooted valleys on Earth.
