4Cs Theatre Students Explore the World of Commercial Fishing Through new Play on Campus

October 31, 2019

Students in the Performing Arts Program at Cape Cod Community College (4Cs) are learning about catch-shares, time at sea, and the difference between “abundance” and “availability” as they work to present a new play, Boundless, written by local playwright Alison Weller. The play, with music by Peter Hodgson and Alison Weller, explores the lives of those in and around the commercial fishing community on Cape Cod.

Originally produced at Cape Rep Theatre in Brewster in 2017, the piece is derived from over 35 interviews with local fishermen, regulators and others who support the fishing industry on Cape Cod. Their stories are interwoven with original songs that range from rousing chanties, contemplative ballads, and even a torch song about seals.

“I’m so pleased to work on Boundless again, with a new cast that includes local students, as well as people who make their living on the water,” Weller said. “Peter and I are excited for the opportunity to shape the piece further and continue the conversation.”

The cast features a blend of 4Cs students, alumni, and community actors including Alyssa Freeman (Hyannis), Bradford Morse (Wellfleet), Chris Kassarjian (Dennis), Diane Brunt (Wellfleet), Kimberly Monteiro (South Yarmouth), Rick Martin (Mashpee), Sam Beresford (Bourne) and Sarah Seaberg (Plainville). The production team includes Genevieve Breitbach (stage manager), Lisa Taylor (musical direction), Matt Kohler (lighting and scenic design), Geof Newton (sound design), and Luc LaFlamme (assistant stage manager).

Boundless is produced by Vana Trudeau, who teaches Rehearsal and Performance at the College, and is directed by Julie Allen Hamilton, Associate Artist at Cape Rep Theatre.

The show will be presented in the Studio Theatre of the Tilden Arts Center at Cape Cod Community College November 7, 8, 9 and 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30pm with Sunday matinees on November 10 and 17 at 2:00pm. A post-show talk back with the playwright, director, cast and representatives from the fishing community will be held on November 10th. Tickets are $25 for General Admission, $20 for Seniors & Military personnel, and $15 for 4Cs faculty & staff. All students with a valid student ID are eligible for free admission with a student ID.
